Local Area

The Barn at Flaxston Gill is situated in the picturesque hamlet of Wrench Green on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park. The area is one of the most beautiful in Yorkshire, with fantastic walks and bike rides right on your doorstep, yet within 7 miles of the popular seaside town of Scarborough, which has an array of amenities including restaurants and shops, as well as an open-air theatre, art gallery, sea life centre, castle and the famous Stephen Joseph Theatre.

There are many walks available right from the doorstep, whether it’s a gentle stroll you are looking for, or something a bit more strenuous. Up the hill from the barn is Wykeham Forest, down the hill is the Forge Valley Woods National Nature Reserve, with a myriad of other walks available. Dalby Forest is around 6 miles away, with 8,000 acres of walking, running and cycle trials, along with an Activity Centre and Go Ape.

For those who love the beach, the area is blessed with miles of sandy beaches (tide dependent). The nearest is at Scarborough North Bay, around 6 miles away, but other glorious sandy beaches can be found at Cayton Bay and Hunmanby Gap, both of which welcome dogs all year round.

As well as Scarborough, Filey, Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby, together with the market towns of Malton and Pickering are all a short drive away.

It should be noted that whilst the location of the Barn at Flaxston Gill is amazing, with that feeling of “getting away from it all” comes the necessity for a car, unless you are an extremely keen and fit walker or cyclist, as there is no local public transport. The nearest shop, pharmacy, petrol station and pub can all be found at East Ayton, approx. 4 miles away.
